“Cultural Self-Determination, Prevents Youth Incarceration”

Every individual regardless of ancestry is of an origin that encompasses many characteristics, views and understandings. The Chicana and Chicano culture as we know it varies in many forms.  Our culture is beautiful and is fundamental to our existence.  Yet sometimes because of social and economical conditions beyond our control, our culture is sometimes forgotten.  This becomes detrimental to a person because one without knowledge of his/her culture is more susceptible of falling short of his/her potential.  This is especially true of Chicanas and Chicanos and all people of indigenous ancestry because of the society that we live in. We are in between a culture clash; a struggle between what society tells us to be and what we feel in our hearts we should be.  As it is written in El Plan de Santa Barbara, “the quest for cultural expression and freedom has taken the form of a struggle.”  This is crucial because we pull pieces from our culture to form our identity. As we grow, our duality of past and present creates a portal in which we open and close as we see fit.  So where do we pull the self-determination from?  This vivid reaction comes from the power to switch from one world to another; we become controllers of our own destiny.  With knowledge of our culture we become self-determined individuals. Thus, the creation of a mural will be a reflection of that cultural self-determination; it will be a reflection of our movement, of our past and present struggles, and of the future that lies ahead.

“Mural”

To be consistent with the statewide conference theme, this year’s fall statewide action will be the creation and painting of a mural.

The mural is a joint project with the Citizens for a Better Placentia, a progressive local community organization.  The location of the mural, Placita Santa Fe “Old Town”, has been in question for not producing enough business and community services and there was even been a threat of an entire demolition of this area just a year ago.  Moreover, many of the cities’ buildings and community sites have been plagued by graffiti and there has also been an increase in criminal activity. In 2005, after years of negotiations, city officials, business owners, and community leaders came to an agreement that would renovate and beautify the historic landmark.  Since its new fate “Old Town” is now the site of new businesses and community service reconstructions.  The mural is intended to promote cultural values and youth prosperity. The mural will also positively inspire youth to seek other creative activities and forms of art and expression.

The artwork will depict the culture of the indigenous people of the Americas.  The piece will recognize vital ancient icons such as Olin (Movement), In La Ex (Duality), Xochi (Peace & Love), the fifth sun and the cosmos.  The mural will cradle youth in their everyday life: a young man reading a book, a young woman reaching out and a community that teaches yet still confines to struggle.  The mural design and theme were created by M.E.Ch.A. de Cal State Fullerton and Tribe Factor Studios in Fullerton, California.  Artist’s rendition and project will be headed by Chicano artists Rudy Negrete and Rick Moreno.
